When getting pictures taken, whether it is with a group or solo,  it can sometimes feel awkward and unnatural. Do not worry, most people feel this way and it is totally normal. Here are some tips to help you get comfortable in front of the camera during your next session.

Wear What Makes You Feel Confident

A great way to get comfortable in front of the camera is to wear what you feel best in. Wear something that makes you feel confident and beautiful/handsome, however make sure you are not uncomfortable. I advise against stilettos but during the summer a wedged heel or cute flats are great! For more ideas on what to wear check out What to Wear for Your Portrait Session.

Have Your Hair And Makeup Done

Getting your pictures taken is always a great excuse to get all fancy and dressed up. Get your hair and makeup done either by a professional, or have a friend or family member do it. Make sure you feel like your prettiest and best self. Looking and feeling your best will make your pictures turn out flawless.

My favorite local professional hair dresser and makeup artist are:

Anna at Huxley Rose Hairshop – 204 South Ridge Street, Breckenridge, CO 80424

Jess from Jess Taylor Makeup

Accept Guidance From The Photographer

I will be able to give you guidance on what poses work best. Some poses may be serious and some might be silly. You may feel awkward or uncomfortable, but don’t worry, I will adjust you to what looks best on camera. Trust in me.

Be in the Present

Most portraits will be taken outside and there may be other people around. The camera could draw attention your way. This might make you nervous or uncomfortable, but the best way to deal with it is to embrace it. If you are having a family session or couples session, interact with the people you are taking your pictures with. This will help to put your focus on your family and just enjoy the present moment.

Understand The Light

When taking pictures outside, there are certain times of day that are better than others due to the way the sun rises or sets. Before sunset is a great time to get your pictures taken, this makes the pictures turn out more flattering and softer. When your session is scheduled for the late afternoon/evening, know that it is because the lighting will be the best to make your pictures turn out beautiful.

Have Fun

Most importantly, have fun! Laugh, make faces and tell jokes. Having a fun and lighthearted session will make you feel more comfortable and give you amazing photos at the end of the day. I want you to have the best experience possible, and to have fun while taking your portraits. Do not be afraid to show your silly side. I am a goof ball during your entire session, portraits should be painless. Let’s let loose and boogie down… yes I did say that lol!
